As you probably know DC motor is an electrical machine. It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. In a DC motor, the input electrical energy is the direct current which is transformed into the mechanical rotation.
You can keep your old DC motors healthy by following a few steps such as:
An effective maintenance program should be based on some type of a maintenance program. It should be like a habit to monitor your DC motor health on a daily basis. You should inspect the motor’s appearance and look for corrosion or dirt buildup. Make sure to check for a burned smell originating from the motor windings. Do not let the dirt accumulate on any surface of the motor. Your motor cooling fan should be also checked very often as well as any dirt-blocking passages. If you will hear any type of noise it may be an indication of poor bearings, any type of imbalance or even loose windings.
Your DC motor can perform well if its brushes and commutator are well-maintained. That's why you have to make sure to inspect the brushes and their connections. If you will notice some big difference in one brush compare to the rest it is time to replace it. Some mechanics suggest to replace all the brushed at the same time, to make sure all will work well.
Just keep your DC motor in optimal condition. This way you will save a lot of troubles and save a lot of money.
